What is TMJ / TMD ?

TMJ is your temporomandibular joint and TMD is temporomandibular jaw disfunction, meaning that your jaw does not work as it should. This issue can create a multitude of problems, consisting of;

  • Jaw clicking
  • Headaches around your temples
  • Clenching and or grinding of your teeth or jaw – you may not notice that you do this yourself as it is most severe whilst asleep.
  • Jaw join discomfort
  • Jaw pain
  • Stiff jaw – you may notice this the most after waking up
  • Restricted jaw movement
  • Limited mouth opening- Some patients find that they find opening their mouth painful especially when yawning or eating
  • Ear pain
  • Neck pain
  • Lock jaw
  • Popping, clicking or a grinding noise when you move your jaw
  • Titatus – This is ringing in the ears and occur in one ear or both.

Causes of TMD pain

  • Stress
  • Uneven bite
  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Wear and tear of the joint
  • Trauma to the head or face

Treatment for TMD pain

Your dentist can assist in multiple ways in order to provide relief from TMD symptoms but there are some things you can do as self help, these include;

  • Soft diet to avoid chewing with a high force
  • Stop habits such as biting your nails and chewing gum
  • Massage the jaw muscles
  • Use a hot (not boiling) water bottle wrapped in a cloth and place against your jaw
  • Reduce stress, you may find meditation or relaxing podcasts or music to be helpful

If these issues do not resolve within 3-6 months then it would be wise to seek treatment options from a professional. The best treatment option(s) for you will depend on the reasoning of your jaw issue and how severe this is.

  • A mouthguard/biteguard can provide relief if you are grinding or clenching your jaw and this is worn overnight to stop your teeth coming into contact. You can wear this on either your upper or lower jaw and a specific 3d digital scan will be taken of your mouth to ensure the perfect fit.
  • Bite alignment can contribute towards TMD symptoms and therefore a bite appliance or aligners can be used to alter the bite and provide relief from jaw pain.
  • Facial aesthetics treatment can be performed in the masseter, which is a muscle located on the side of your jaw. Its primary function is to open and close the mouth for chewing. The muscle is extremely strong and providing relaxation by blocking nerve signals to the muscles ensures that patients receive an improved feeling in this area.  This treatment takes around 15-20 minutes and is required place every 3 – 6months.
