Fixed braces are firmly attached to your teeth and remain there throughout your orthodontic treatment, meaning that the outcome is consistent and effective as they’re always working! They incorporate ceramic (tooth coloured) or metal brackets and are connected together by a wire which gradually ensures your teeth move into their correct position.
Your teeth are held in place in your jawbone by your periodontal ligament, this is a soft tissue which can accommodate pressure placed onto it. As your braces are tightened at each appointment, your periodontal ligament is remodeled and your teeth are able to move because one side of the ligament is compressed whilst the other side is anchored into its new position.
Small, precise tweeks are made and you will have different strength wires placed throughout your treatment which are made from nickel-titanium. These wires start off as thin and flexible and increase to thicker and firmer as your treatment progresses. Please make sure that you avoid any foods which are sticky, chewy or hard as this can make your braces debond and elongate your treatment time.
Continue to use your electric toothbrush, mouthwash and interdental brushes throughout your treatment. It is important to make sure that you are cleaning correctly around your brackets to avoid plaque build up, you should also visit our hygienist as recommended by your Dentist and orthodontic therapist.
