Multiple Dental Implants

Usually an implant will support 1.5 ratio of dental restoration, so 2 implants will support a 3 unit bridge, or 6 implants will support a 12 unit bridge. Wisdom teeth are never replaced with implants!

If an implant supported overdenture is being considered, then 4 or 6 implants will support the removable denture. The more implants, the better the stability.

Often bone grafting is required in the rear of the upper jaw and this is called a sinus lift. It can be needed on one side or both sides of the mouth (just below the eye socket)

When rear molars are lost, the bone diminishes and this allows the nasal sinuses to expand and move into the area where the bone had been. A certain thickness of bone is needed to allow an implant to be placed. The surgeon will use a special tooth to lift up the sinus membrane and place artificial bone into the space. This is covered by a membrane and quite often, the implant placement can be done during the same appointment. Whilst this is now a routine treatment, it is still an intricate surgical procedure that requires skill and concentration and experience from the surgeon.
